The peepal tree (Ficus religiosa), or sacred fig, is a large, fast-growing evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent with distinctive heart-shaped leaves ending in a long, narrow "drip tip". It has smooth, gray bark and produces round, purplish-brown figs containing small flowers. The tree is culturally significant in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, is a source of abundant oxygen, and provides habitat for wildlife.
